Forty years after the release of Andrei Tarkovsky's film Stalker (1979), the Akademie der Künste is addressing its significance and current interpretations in a two-day symposium and accompanying film programme on 26 and 27 April. This film – more than other works by Tarkovsky – was disturbing in its own time and has left its mark on our collective visual memory. Then, as now, the film hit an existential nerve with its probing questions; and its dystopian traits emerge all the more clearly against the background of a growing crisis of consciousness.
The symposium examines various levels of the film from the perspectives of literature, art and film studies as well as from a media arts point of view. It invites artists from East and West to join in a discussion about their personal relationships to the work and also to its author.
Film recordings made in Germany during the final months of Andrei Tarkovsky's life – shot while Ebbo Demant was filming his documentary – will be shown for the first time. Die Rückkehr – The Return by Andrey Zvyagintsev, which has received a number of awards, including the Kunstpreis (Berlin Art Prize) of the Akademie der Künste in 2015, will be screened on the second evening as a reference film. The special event is curated by Jule Reuter and Claus Löser.
