Presentation of the 2020 Ellen Auerbach Fellowship for Photography to Ferhat Bouda

The Akademie der Künste is awarding the 2020 Ellen Auerbach Fellowship for Photography to the photographer Ferhat Bouda. At the presentation ceremony on Sunday, 25 October 2020, Hubertus von Amelunxen will deliver the laudatory speech. This will be followed by a conversation between the award winner and the photographer Barbara Klemm. Academy President Jeanine Meerapfel will give a welcome address.

Bouda’s life project is dedicated to the Berbers. His mission is to protect the singularity of their culture with and in pictures. Bouda was chosen on the recommendation of photographer Tina Bara and Akademie members Barbara Klemm and Hubertus von Amelunxen. In their jury statement they wrote: “What kind of photography is Bouda’s? Be they documents, reportage or art, his pictures of the Berbers are marked by a moving human quest, by a visual probing that raises the question of humanity with every exposure.”

In an audio feature on the digital platform of the JUNGE AKADEMIE at this link, Bouda tells stories and provides background information about selected pictures – about the lives of different communities in Kabylia, the Atlas Mountains and in Frankfurt am Main.

Financed from the estate of Ellen Auerbach, the Ellen Auerbach Fellowship for Photography worth EUR 20,000 is awarded every two years. The estate is held at the Akademie der Künste; beneficiaries of the Ellen Auerbach Fellowship are fellows of the JUNGEN AKADEMIE. Ellen Auerbach Fellowship holders of recent years have been Annette Frick (2018), Stephanie Kiwitt (2016), Julian Röder (2014) and Natalie Czech (2012).

Ferhat Bouda, born in Algeria (Kabylia) in 1976, has been living in Frankfurt am Main as a freelance photographer since 2005. Bouda’s work has been exhibited at the Visa pour L’Image photo festival in Perpignan (France) and at the SCAM gallery in Paris, among others. He is a fellowship holder of the French Boulat Prize and the Hessian Cultural Foundation. As a member of the VU’ agency in Paris, his works are published in numerous magazines and newspapers.
