On 3 March 2023, the Akademie der Künste will present the 2022 Käthe Kollwitz Prize to the American photographer and film-maker Nan Goldin.
In honouring Nan Goldin, the Academy is recognising an artist with a key position in the global contemporary photography scene who has broken taboos and pushed the envelope with photographs of her personal milieu and the LGBTQ* community. Speaking at the award ceremony will be Academy president Jeanine Meerapfel, Rolf Tegtmeier, Director executive staff, Kreissparkasse Köln, and cultural and art scholar Hubertus von Amelunxen. The encomium will be given by Klaus Biesenbach, director of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Following the ceremony, you are invited to a party with DJ Phillip Sollmann starting at 10 pm.
The exhibition Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2022: Nan Goldin features photographs by the artist spanning a period of five decades and is on display at the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg until 19 March 2023. On the day of the award ceremony, the Akademie der Künste will offer a press viewing of the show with a tour conducted by Anke Hervol. The exhibition will be open until midnight on that day, with free entry from 7 pm on.
On 5 March 2023, the Akademie der Künste will preview the documentary film All the Beauty and the Bloodshed by Laura Poitras, who shadowed Nan Goldin in her fight against the Sackler pharmaceutical company when she combined the roles of activist and artist. The film won the Golden Lion in Venice in 2022 and has this year been nominated for an Oscar in the best documentary category. The film will be released in German cinemas on 25 May 2023.
The award and the exhibition and publication that accompany it are co-financed by Kreissparkasse Köln, which sponsors the Käthe Kollwitz Museum Cologne. The award ceremony and film screening form part of the EMOP Opening Days during EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography, emop-berlin.eu
