From 19 April to 16 July 2023, the Akademie der Künste presents the exhibition “POWER SPACE VIOLENCE. Planning and Building under National Socialism”. The exhibition shows how spatial and urban planning and architecture helped cement the racist ideology of National Socialism in society. It presents to the public, for the first time, the findings of the interdisciplinary research project “Planning and Building under National Socialism. Prerequisites, Institutions, Impacts.” 15 research projects were awarded and supervised by the Independent Commission of Historians (UHK), which was formed in 2017 and includes Wolfgang Benz, Tilman Harlander, Elke Pahl-Weber, Wolfram Pyta, Adelheid von Saldern, Wolfgang Schäche and Regina Stephan.
The commission’s choice of the Akademie der Künste as exhibition venue could hardly be more steeped in history. As of 1937, this was where Albert Speer worked as “General Building Inspector for the Reich Capital”. The exhibition is curated by Benedikt Goebel, with the support of Harald Bodenschatz and Angelika Königseder as academic advisors.

An illustrated catalogue will be published alongside the exhibition, and an extensive accompanying programme including educational opportunities for children, young people and adults is planned.
