Discussion Programme for the “Performing Exiles” Festival at the Akademie der Künste: Lectures, Performances and Talks
22–24 June 2023, Hanseatenweg
From 22– 24 June 2023, the “Performing Exiles” Festival of the Berliner Festspiele, in cooperation with the Akademie der Künste, presents a discursive performative programme. International artists, writers and musicians are coming together in Berlin for three days of lectures, performances and discussions at the Akademie building on Hanseatenweg to address topics that include fear, exile, and (not) belonging.
Based on a concept and curated by author and theologian Senthuran Varatharajah and writer and composer Fabian Saul, a choreographed evening with readings, lectures, and sound performances is taking place under the title “Angst, wie wir sie kennen” (Fear as We Know It) on 22 June. Ten artists examine cinematic, literary, musical and discursive figures and narratives about fear. They deal with parting, saying goodbye and loss, ghosts and doppelgangers, darkness and demons. Topics related to exile, questions of belonging and memory, and Berlin as a place of refuge are the focus of the two-day meeting “All That is Musical in Us is Memory” (23‒24 June). Natasha Ginwala and Magnus Elias Rosengarten curated the talks, lecture performances and listening sessions. How does knowledge about artistic works shape collective memory? How is artistic affiliation perceived in a city like Berlin?
The “Performing Exiles” Festival (15–25 June 2023) is a forum for performative art by exiled artists helping to shape cultural life in Berlin. Curated by Matthias Lilienthal, member of the Akademie der Künste’s Performing Arts Section, in consultation with performance artist Rabih Mroué, the festival examines the concept of exile against the backdrop of constant global change and multiple migratory movements.

The discussion programme is a Berliner Festspiele event and part of the “Performing Exiles” Festival in cooperation with the Akademie der Künste, Berlin. It is funded by the Allianz Foundation and the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb).
