In the past, such crimes against humanity as the Shoah, genocide in Ruanda and Yugoslavia, and the history of violence in the Congo or in Argentina have been extensively discussed – though often with groups of lawyers, political scientists, activists and artists remaining among themselves. The “Memory and Justice” symposium provides a forum for interdisciplinary discussions to address mass crimes and how they are dealt with. Panel discussions, readings, screenings and artistic works address the historical complex of crimes and discuss techniques of coming to terms with them. How does criminal law persecution relate to a civil society culture of remembrance? What are the cultural and political consequences of impunity and public silence over serious mass crimes?
