You Want Kilims, But I Do Films –
Art and Culture in Turkey

Political and social upheavals in Turkey have decisively changed working conditions for artists, scientists and journalists. In the special programme "You Want Kilims, But I Do Films – Art and Culture in Turkey", representatives from various cultural sectors will present their practice.

Turgut Erçetin, born in Istanbul in 1983, studied composition and musical theory with Pieter Snapper, Kamran Ince, and Michael Ellison at the Istanbul Technical University Center for Advanced Music Studies (MIAM). Since 2009, Turgut Erçetin participates in the Graduate Program for Composition at Stanford University, California with Brian Ferneyhough and further at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. His current works deal with different aspects of sound - not in the sense of acoustic color, but in the sense of their functionality, which can be experienced by different degrees of complexity as a result of composed acoustics. Much of his research and works are therefore closely connected with psychoacoustics and computer-assisted compositional processes. In conversation with Arnold Dreyblatt, composer and musician himself, Turgut Erçetin will present his work.

His solo and chamber music works as well as his electroacoustic works have been performed in the USA and Europe, at festivals like MaerzMusik in Berlin, Gaudeamus in Amsterdam, Manifesto in Paris. Erçetin worked with renowned string quartets (JACK, Arditti, Sonar), ensembles (adapters, ELISION) and soloists (Seth Josel, Severine Ballon). In 2016 Erçetin had a scholarship of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.
