Rethinking Modernity

Conference

Berlin boasts two constructed manifestos of political and aesthetic confrontation: the Karl-Marx-Allee (formerly Stalinallee), built from 1951–58, and Interbau 1957 in the Hansaviertel. This conference will address the debate in a larger context, using examples from Eastern and Western Europe, and will investigate them through historical analysis and typological comparisons. Speakers are Jörg Haspel, Thomas Flierl, Birgitta Ringbeck, Hadas Nevo-Goldberst, Michael Schmidt, Alla Stashkevich, Maciej Czarnecki, Natalia Dushkina, Manfred Kühne, Bernhard Furrer, Marieke Kuipers. In cooperation with the Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, the Berlin Monument Authority, and ICOMOS Germany.
