“Kunst am Bau” in the GDR

As commissioned art, building-related art forms the link between architecture, art, politics and urban design. In the GDR, it’s function was to depict political content and propagate idealised social images. Nevertheless, numerous works were created that are still objects of identification today. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of “Kunst am Bau” (percent for art) on behalf of the state, this internationally unique art collection and its significance for the cultural history of Germany will be examined in greater detail.
