JUNGE AKADEMIE – Open Studios

The JUNGE AKADEMIE (Young Academy) of the Akademie der Künste is opening its studios in Berlin’s Hansaviertel for a collective presentation by five fellows working in the visual arts, performing arts and literature as well as guest artists. Video works, research, paintings, sculptures and live performance are featured.

Two Martin Roth Fellows, Andrey Anro and Vasilisa Palianina, use paintings and sculptures, among other media, to address the protest movements in Belarus as well as the principles and symbolism of authoritarianism and totalitarian regimes. They have also invited the artist Alexander Adamov to present one of his objects combining art and play that examines transformability as an act of resistance. In her video work, Katya Berlova, a visual artist and special fellow at the Akademie, provides glimpses into empty tourist resorts in the USSR during the 1970s, accompanied by their ideological history. Claire Fercak, a writer and Berlin Fellow, shares her research on childhood, which is forming the basis for a new novel. The energy crisis in Lebanon is the subject of a new video work by filmmaker and Architecture Fellow Maissa Maatouk. From a distant vantage point, she reinterprets the constant state of interrupted service into a tableau reconstructing a nocturnal city view with its remaining flickering lights. Together with performers Margaux Marielle-Tréhoüart, Joel Suarez Gomez and Laurie Young, performer, sound artist and Performing Arts Fellow Andrew Schneider provides dance insights into the process for a new work. The performance is taking place in cooperation with Sasha Waltz & Guests.
