Freedom Betrayed. The Akademie der Künste, the Book Burning and the Consequences

The burning books in Berlin on 10 May 1933 were a visible sign that the freedom of art, but also the freedom of the individual in Germany, was over. The Prussian Academy of Arts had already given up its freedom in February when it allowed itself to be brought into line by the National Socialists who had just come to power. The members who subsequently resigned or were expelled will be remembered this evening with readings from their works.
In a small exhibition, letters, official documents, newspaper articles, manuscripts and books from the holdings of the Archives of the Akademie der Künste will be on display.
