Route 181 – Fragments of a Journey in Palestine-Israel A contribution to Berlinale 2024

Film

Route 181 presents an unusual perspective on the people of Palestine-Israel. For more than a year, palestinian film maker Michel Khleifi and israeli film director Eyal Sivan devoted themselves to the production of what they consider a cinematic act of faith and trust: a joint film. In the summer of 2002, they spent two long months travelling together through the country of their birth, drawing their route on a map and calling it Route 181. This virtual line marks the borders of UN Resolution 181 of 29 November 1947, according to which Palestine was to be divided into two states. On their extensive journey, they only had coincidental encounters. No meetings were arranged in advance, nor were personalities or “official” dialogue partners contacted.
